Fast Co-op Facts

The Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative (AFCOOP), the oldest English-language film co-op in Canada, was created by 17 filmmakers who met in a bar and decided to start a co-op. Within a year they had secured a $50,000 grant from the Canada Council; hundreds of films have since been made there. Other co-ops in Atlantic Canada include the Centre for Art Tapes in Halifax (video), the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-op in Fredericton, and the Island Media Arts Co-op in PEI.

BLOG

Tolerance and Acceptance - I come from a community that's relatively small- and as a result, everyone knows everyone. It’s the type of community that people know more about you and the things you’ve done than you do- true or false. I think you know what I'm talking about. Over the past couple of years, I've noticed that people have been using homosexuality as a put down. I've heard things such as "Man, that's so gay" and "Shut up, fag." It's extremely disrespectful, and what's even worse is that the teachers don't say anything. When it comes to racism, authority figures in our school will step in a little, but when it comes to homophobia, they turn the other cheek. I try to confront the people who say things like that, and the typical response is "It's not like there are gay people around when I say it." But that simply doesn't make it right. If there were individuals around that identify themselves as homosexual when things like that were said, do you really think they're going to feel comfortable telling you so? Secondly, "gay" is not a synonym for stupid. And that's a fact that apparently needs to be learned. As for the origin of the word "fag"- it goes back to when people used to burn homosexuals at the stake. The fags were the sticks of wood they used to hang around their necks when they burned. Through the Healthy Relationships for Youth program at my school, I try to raise awareness of these things and promote tolerance and acceptance. However, I think the administration should do their part and tell the students that homophobic slurs will not be tolerated, just as racist slurs and curse words are not allowed. It is my hope that someday the word "fag" will be eliminated completely, and that the word "gay" will be used only in a positive light.
