BLOG

I’ve always been a girl who loves body art. Needless to say, I was so excited to get my first tattoo done this summer. The fact that I’ve never really loved needles meant I was pretty nervous too! Thankfully, I had a great group of people to make sure the whole experience went well.

I found a tattoo parlour that I really liked and came highly recommended. I went in to talk to the guys who work there and get their help with the design. They were really patient as I asked them to move one star there, turn that star a bit back, and change the size of that one. After we got my design all worked out, I set up an appointment and began getting butterflies in my tummy! My friends Jordan and Kate immediately volunteered to come along with me for emotional support. On the big day, they were allowed to come in the room while I was getting the tattoo done, which was a huge help! Yes, getting the tattoo did hurt, but it wasn’t that bad. I didn’t cry or pass out, like a lot of people the guys in the tattoo parlour have seen.

Now I have a wonderful tattoo that I love and have gotten tons of compliments on! I was worried my mum might not like it, but she thinks it’s beautiful, and she wants me to come with her to help design her own tattoo! I have a lot more tattoo ideas in mind, and I can’t wait to get inked again. – Bethany Mayne (ACYL participant, Creative Director and facilitator)

The Danes are living proof that community-owned power can go a long way to create a renewable energy future.

In the 1970’s, three rural Danish families banded together and installed a wind turbine, creating the world's first green energy co-op. Today, the Middlegrunden co-op owns and operates the world’s largest off-shore wind farm outside Copenhagen harbour. Wind turbine manufacturing is Denmark’s top export and wind power co-ops are a nationwide movement with more than 100,000 family members. Together the co-ops have installed 80% of Denmark's turbines which now account for 10% of the entire country's electricity needs. Danes anticipate 50% of their electricity will come from wind by 2030.
